Ten Years After

For anybody who will be devotees of Woodstock, you can expect to recognize it " 10 years After” as the identity of a blues band of that era, an era that is popular for many things, but certainly not computer technology. � Electric guitars they had aplenty, but not a single participant at that festival of music would have imagined that, forty years afterwards, students would be sitting in classes with notebook computers propped in the garden. � For teachers and students in our college, " a decade after” presents a reflection time, for it was ten years in the past that we presented laptops in to our sessions. Of course , as frequently pointed out, the laptop computer is yet a tool. � When I think of tools, I think from the hammers and crow bars I utilized this summer to pull up the three layers of your living space floor. � Simple tools, simple tasks, simple – predictable, that may be – effects (including a sore back). � The laptop computer is definitely anything but a simple tool. � Hence, it isn't surprising to find, ten years following, that we are still figuring out just how it matches the anything-but-simple task of teaching students. � And so, I decided it was period I talked with our Technology Learning and Teaching Professional, Justin Medved – yes, precisely the same fellow who also a year ago recommended I begin this blog. � Justin and I have been having conversations ever since, and each of our conversations led recently to a workshop we ran with our teachers – Learning inside the 21stCentury Classroom. � A couple of themes came out of that workshop that I need to share, not really that they will big surprise anyone, although I believe that they can must contact form a starting point for everyone who wishes to reflect further about laptop computers and learning. The first theme is even older than Woodstock – " the medium is a message”. � So wrote Marshall McLuhan, a great Canadian, in 1964. � With regards to education, the medium is multi-layered, and includes all of the subtle ways that our children get the message, from your position the teacher consumes the class room to whether or perhaps not there is also a wireless interconnection. � For years, teachers include enjoyed the fact that they have significant amounts of control over the medium. � They generally opt for the textbook, pick the arrangement of desks, want to lecture or discuss, to see or have the youngsters read, the homework, the projects, the essay headings and even the color of the chalk or markers – each one is shaped by teacher's selections. � Ruler or full of his or her own site, the tutor appears on the surface to regulate the method. � But since post-modern thinkers have advised to us, you can simply hope to control the moderate and the communication that runs from it if you understand the myriad� ways in which messages can be received and the multiple text messages that may result. Teachers already are beginning to appreciate something with this. � In the time I have been involved in education most teachers have become mindful of implicit messages that we happen to be in danger of selling, including the next: a) � weight loss learn with no teacher,
b) � the tutor and all instructor resources are authoritative, c) � a learning community is known as a dictatorship,
d) � the instructor is the only arbiter inside the class of what is important to learn, and e) � learning is a passive activity where the students and so are with understanding by the instructor.
